Prevent Chargebacks

It is important for merchants to make sure their customers are protected from fraudulent transactions in order to avoid chargebacks. Credit card disputes, or “chargebacks”, present the biggest obstacles to running a successful e-Commerce business.


Basically the process of chargeback goes as follows - cardholder files a dispute, and issuing bank makes an investigation into the complaint. After the transaction is proven to be fraudulent the bank will refund the original value to the cardholder.


The problem for the merchant is not only the loss of the entire value of the transaction but also the chargeback fee and risk of being labeled by the associations as a fraudulent merchant. If merchants chargeback ratio exceeds over a certain threshold the processor can shut down the merchant account and place them on a MATCH or TMF file and they may never be able to get a merchant account again. This service is known as Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode. A transaction using Verified by Visa/SecureCode will redirect cardholders to the website of their card issuing bank. The cardholder may then be requested by their bank to enter a password to be authenticated. If a customer is not registered with 3D Secure then they are still able to make a purchase from you web site.
